More Than a Curriculum

At Collingwood, we believe that education is about much more than academic achievement. Our enrichment programme helps children develop the knowledge, skills, experiences and character they need to flourish both now and in the future.

We are committed to ensuring that every child has access to a rich variety of opportunities that broaden horizons, raise aspirations and create lifelong memories. Through our enrichment framework, pupils develop confidence, resilience, creativity, responsibility and a strong sense of belonging within their community.

Our enrichment offer is built around five key areas that support children in becoming successful learners, responsible citizens and the adults of the future.

Civic Engagement

We believe that children should understand the importance of contributing positively to their school, local community and wider society. Through opportunities to lead, serve and participate, pupils develop a sense of responsibility, respect and active citizenship.

Examples at Collingwood

• School Council and pupil leadership opportunities, such as a playground leader or SEND champion.
• Charity fundraising and community events.
• Supporting local causes and volunteering projects.
• Taking part in debates and pupil voice activities, for example when speaking at the HCAT School Council meetings.
• Learning about democracy through elections and decision-making.
• Working alongside community groups and visitors.

Arts and Culture

We want every child to experience the richness of culture and the arts. Creative opportunities help pupils express themselves, build confidence and develop an appreciation of the diverse world around them.

Through specialised teaching and visitors demonstrating music, art, drama, dance and cultural experiences, children are encouraged to explore their talents and discover new interests.

• Performing in whole-school productions with specialised teaching from National Academy of Performing Arts.
• Working with professional musicians to deliver a spectacular opera, alongside other local pupils.
• Visiting museums, theatres and places of cultural interest, ensuring all pupils experience art and media in all form. (Live theatre, dance, cinematic experiences).
• Art exhibitions and creative projects. Showcasing artwork through exhibitions and displays and sharing this at events such as the annual HCAT Children’s Conference.
• Visits to museums, galleries and theatres.
• Celebrating festivals and traditions from different cultures

Nature, Outdoors and Adventure

Learning beyond the classroom allows children to develop resilience, independence and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

We provide opportunities for pupils to connect with nature, understand environmental issues and take part in adventurous experiences that challenge and inspire them.

Examples at Collingwood

• Caring for school gardens, allotments and wildlife areas, through lunchtime clubs lead by our headteacher, Mrs Baxter.
• Taking part in recycling and waste reduction initiatives, such as Hull City Council’s Two Tonne Challenge.
• Learning about climate change and sustainability through our Geography curriculum and within our coaching sessions.
• Participating in local environmental improvement projects, working alongside the Woodlands Trust to help generate more wooded areas around the school grounds, this includes planting trees and creating habitats for wildlife. In addition, working with areas of the local council and safer neighbourhoods to tidy up the local area, offer feedback on facilities and guide decision making through our pupil voice. 

Sport and Physical Activity

We believe that an active lifestyle supports both physical and mental wellbeing. Through a range of sporting and physical activities, children learn teamwork, determination, leadership and healthy habits.

Our aim is for every child to find a form of physical activity that they enjoy and can continue into later life.

Wider Life and Future Skills

Preparing children for the future means equipping them with practical skills, knowledge and experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

Through a wide range of opportunities, pupils develop problem-solving skills, creativity, financial awareness, digital confidence and an understanding of the rapidly changing world around them.

Examples at Collingwood

• Financial education including spending, saving and budgeting. Our financial curriculum is progressive and helps pupils understand three core concepts; spending, earning, saving as well as budgeting and making informed financial decisions.
• Digital literacy and online safety education.
• Running enterprise projects and school fundraising events through the seasonal fairs across the school year.
• Learning about saving, budgeting and making choices with money, a bespoke learning program which allows children to have real-life experiences and interactions with money, based around other areas of the enrichment curriculum, such as DT and cooking.
• Exploring careers and the world of work through themed activities, days, events, visits and visitors. Our aim is to connect our pupils to potential, local future employers such as Siemans and Smith and Nephew.
• Planning budgets for class projects, community or charity events. Our pupils have full control in running our weekly Fair Share stall which provides reduced food items to support the local community.

Enrichment Beyond the School Day

Our enrichment offer extends beyond the curriculum through clubs, educational visits, visitors, performances, competitions, special events and after-school clubs.

These opportunities help children develop new interests, pursue their passions and create lasting memories with their friends and classmates.
